Yuon On is a 44 year old widow. She has a 16 year old daughter who does not attend school as she has to help earn money.
The family is one of the poorest in Tuol Vihea - a village in Baray commune of Kang Meas district in Kampong Cham Province.
Yuon On and her daughter usually only manage to grow enough food for six months of the year. She and her daughter work planting and harvesting of rice for other villagers and make extra money by buying and selling fish, but this only brings in 3,000 Reil per day ($0.75).
NAS set up a Self-Help Groups and mobilised the group members to save money and rice. The group provided Yuon On 400,000 Riel ($100) as a capital loanand with this she established a small business cooking meat, meals and fish the capital borrowed, she has used to establish a small business to sale cooking mix, meals and fish. This way her income is raised to 5,000 Riel ($1.25) per day and she saves 1,000 Riel per month to put into the saving group.
Addition to her job, Youn On bought a small big to feed up to sell. Her daughter helps her with the business and does not need to work outside the village.
"Now, my family living is better than before, I have a real job and have stopped selling labour. I have saved my own capital to improve my small business and can save every month and repay money into the group so that others can borrow the money. My family now has food for eight months instead of five." said Yuon On
