Houn Sheang Huy is an energetic 15 year oldgirl. She has one brother and one sister and they Live with their mother in Phnom Thom Village, Chealea Commune, Bathey Distric. She attends Cheurng Chnuk High School.
Her father passed away in 2003 and her mother lives with HIV. Her mother struggles to support the family on her single wage, but she still volunteers as a community support volunteer with NAS as she thinks it's important to help her community. Sadly, this does not stop the community from looking down upon and discriminating against the family because of their health status.
When Houn Sheang got a scratch on her leg that would not heal when treated, her mother took her for a blood test. She was found to be HIV positive as well.
NAS staff support Houn Sheang by visiting regularly and helping her with education about enlist to school, education on program, health, STI, Drug, Living HIV, Care oneself, and has changed her life. She knows how to support herself and to prevent herself from becoming ill.
The NAS Home Based Care staff also work in the community, sharing knowledge about HIV, and this has improved their attitude towards the family.
Houn Sheang is happy with life and in her free time she teaches at a club for Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVCs), often talking about HIV and AIDS. In the future she wants to become a Doctor so that she can help her community, her family and the poor.
