Auntie Heng Seap has a family of four. They are farmers and live in Ktouy Village, one of 13 villages in O M-lou Commune where 60% of the villagers are farmers and 40% are laborers.
The village is home to 194 households with a population of 951, but there are only 166 toilets with (62 dry pits and 104 a flush). The village has a good supply of clean water via sealed wells and they already boil or filter it for drinking.
However, the nearest health centre is 14 Kilometers away, via very bad roads. Health visitors rarely visit and because of poor general hygiene, villagers are often sick with diarrhea, stomach ache, nausea and vomitting. The cost of treatment is at least 200,000 to 400,000 Riels ($50-100) a time.
After NAS visited, Auntie Heng Seap purchased a toilet set for 240,000 Riels (60$) and 200,000 Riels (50$ )from an non-profit agency via the Commune Council. This means they no longer have to go to the toilet in the yard, which makes the environment much more hygienic. They are also sure to wash their hands and to drink safe water, as before.
In time, a further 22 toilets, including with 8 dry pits were also built by the villagers, thanks to the education that they had received.
Ktouy3 is another nearby target village for the project. Two representatives were trained by NAS and supported by the project officers to trigger hygiene practises in the village, which has been a great success. As a result, the villagers understand hygiene and apply hygiene practices daily by washing their hands with soap, using toilets and cleaning up their yards.
After careful evaluation by Kampong Cham Provincial Department of Rural Development and the District of Education Youth Officer Ktouy3 Village is now an ODF village.
Mr. Sek Sem, the Village Chief, expressed a huge thank you to NAS for chosing them and for improving their health. He said that he personally, and the villagers are committed to trigger positive health behavious in neighboring villages as well as his own.
