Moeun is a 77 year old grandfather and his life is not an easy one. He lives in a tiny, worn-out cottage made from palm leaves with his 71 year old disabled wife Thin, and their 26 year old daughter Soly, who is also disabled. A second daughter and her child also lives with them.
Moeun currently owns about half an hectare of land (he used to own more but he had to sell it to pay for health treatment for his family). He plants rice but can only produce enough for five or six months. Sometimes he needs to be leant rice from his neighbours to eat temporarily and often he has to rely on another of his daughters, who is working in a factory Phnom Penh, to send him money.
It is a big load for Moeun to feed the whole family with such a tiny income. He wants to develop specific skills for living but until now has had no access to support or training.
Moeun took part in two of the Community-Led Total Sanitation Events led by NAS and supported by Plan International in 2012. His commitment to his family and to changing the hygiene and sanitation practices around has been a real inspiration.
The hygiene promotion and explanation on the design and techniques for building a toilet helped him understand the importance of using a toilet, drinking safe water, and washing hands with soap. He was so encouraged that he built a toilet for his own household using existing resources such as bamboo, palm leaves, an old jar, and about 3000 Riel (US$ 0.75) to buy nails.
Moeun told us that it only took a little time to build and a little amount of money but that it makes the whole family healthy and comfortable, especially his disabled wife and daughter who no longer need to be helped in order to visit the latrine.
Moeun no persuades others to copy him as once you know how to do it, it takes very little money and time.
